GLENGARRIFF

As you drive further west the palms increase with the influence of the Gulf Stream. In this most attractive of settings is Glengarriff (An Gleann Garbh). It is here in this botanical wonderland you will find the remains of the ancient oak forests that once covered Ireland. The habour is protected by several islands, the most famous of these is Garnish Island. In the early part of the century this was a bare rock until after the depositing (by the owner) of hundreds of tons of topsoil did it become a bed for many exotic plants, now proudly titled the Italian Gardens. In the summer it is ablaze with colour with the amazing contrast of the dramatic Caha Mountains as a backdrop across the bay. There are many boats offering trips to the island, most from the 'blue pool' and it is recommended to check first with the Tourist Informations Office (027 - 63084 - seasonal) for advice and details of ticket prices and admission charges.
